But you may want to consider another layer of protection: helmets.<\/div>\n<p>Last year, the Children\u2019s Hospital of Eastern Ontario saw 1,270 children with head injuries, 41 of those were related to tobogganing.<\/p>\n<p>20-year-old Tyler Lisacek knows too well the devastating effect a brain injury can have on someone\u2019s life.\u00a0 At 13-years-old, he was hit by a car while riding his bicycle home from swimming.\u00a0 Tyler had just taken his helmet off because he was hot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had been hit by an SUV going 98 km an hour,\u201d Lisacek was later told. \u201cMy head went into the hood of the car and I got launched 7 feet in the air into the ditch.\u00a0 Nothing has been the same since then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CHEO neurosurgeon Dr. Michael Vassilyadi operated on Tyler. \u201cAs a result of that, he had a severe head injury and had to be in the intensive care unit for a month,\u201d says Dr. Vassilyadi.\u00a0 \u201cAll parts of his brain were injured.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ottawa.ctvnews.ca\/brain-injury-patient-urges-kids-to-wear-helmets-1.1126584#ixzz2IvFCrKev\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read more<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In this bitter cold, you want to make sure your children are well protected if they&#8217;re going skating or tobogganing.
