They\u2019re nocturnal, after all.<\/p>\n<p>That thought experiment has led the researchers to discover that an adult mammal\u2019s brain can \u201crewire\u201d itself in response to light by recruiting brain cells to change the signaling chemical they ordinarily produce.<\/p>\n<p>Their research, published Thursday in the journal Science, offers hints toward new avenues of research into\u00a0<a id=\"HEDAI0000032\" class=\"taxInlineTagLink\" title=\"Parkinson's Disease\" href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/topic\/health\/diseases-illnesses\/parkinsons-disease-HEDAI0000032.topic\">Parkinson&#8217;s disease<\/a>, stroke, addiction and\u00a0<a id=\"HEBEC00005\" class=\"taxInlineTagLink\" title=\"Depression\" href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/topic\/health\/behavioral-conditions\/depression-HEBEC00005.topic\">depression<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dulcis and Spitzer had already tinkered lower in the evolutionary ladder, showing that neurons in frogs switched transmitters &#8211; including one that determined pigment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/science\/sciencenow\/la-sci-sn-rats-depression-20130425,0,346121.story\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read More&gt;&gt;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nicholas Spitzer and Davide Dulcis felt for people in higher latitudes whose attitudes soured in the shorter daylight hours of winter.
