{"id":1128,"date":"2013-08-12T15:20:31","date_gmt":"2013-08-12T15:20:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.brainstreams.ca\/obama-announces-aid-initiative-to-help-wounded-veterans\/"},"modified":"2025-07-04T09:16:57","modified_gmt":"2025-07-04T16:16:57","slug":"obama-announces-aid-initiative-to-help-wounded-veterans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/messageinabottle.ca\/bcbia\/obama-announces-aid-initiative-to-help-wounded-veterans\/","title":{"rendered":"Obama announces aid initiative to help wounded veterans"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"field field-type-link field-field-link-original-article\">ORLANDO \u2014 President Obama on Saturday announced an initiative to help treat veterans with brain injuries and mental-health conditions, as he and first lady Michelle Obama paid tribute to disabled veterans before departing on their summer holiday.<\/div>\n<p>Speaking to the annual conference of Disabled American Veterans, which represents 1.2\u00a0million people nationwide, Obama announced a $100\u00a0million grant to research centers, led by the University of Texas at San Antonio and Virginia Commonwealth University, dedicated to treating\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-srv\/special\/metro\/traumatic-brain-injury\/index.html#\/intro\/\" data-xslt=\"_http\">brain injuries and mental-health issues<\/a>, particularly\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/health-science\/unraveling-ptsd-3-factors-needed-for-condition-to-progress\/2013\/07\/15\/d74d04f6-e8a9-11e2-8f22-de4bd2a2bd39_story.html\" data-xslt=\"_http\">post-traumatic stress disorder<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He also said his administration would launch an effort to share research among the numerous federal agencies studying and providing treatment to veterans with neurological problems.<\/p>\n<p>Brain injury and disease are among the enduring legacies of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, with significant numbers of veterans suffering post-traumatic stress disorder.
