{"id":10872,"date":"2013-09-04T17:25:52","date_gmt":"2013-09-04T17:25:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.brainstreams.ca\/brain-window-implant-devised\/"},"modified":"2025-07-04T09:16:57","modified_gmt":"2025-07-04T16:16:57","slug":"brain-window-implant-devised","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/messageinabottle.ca\/bcbia\/brain-window-implant-devised\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Brain window&#8217; implant devised"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"field field-type-link field-field-link-original-article\">\u00a0A &#8220;window to the brain&#8221; implant which would allow doctors to see through the skull and possibly treat patients has been devised by US researchers.<\/div>\n<p>It uses a see-through version of the same material used for hip implants.<\/p>\n<p>The team at University of California, Riverside, say it could allow lasers to be fired into the brain to treat neurological disorders.<\/p>\n<p>The implant was reported in the journal\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1549963413003614\">Nanomedicine: Nanotechnology, Biology and Medicine.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The researchers say emerging laser-treatments in stroke and cancer care and brain imaging require access to the brain.<\/p>\n<p>However, they are limited as a part of the skull needs to be removed and replaced each time a treatment is performed.<\/p>\n<p>Instead the team of scientists have devised a transparent implant that would replace a small section of the skull.<\/p>\n<p>They have converted a material &#8211; yttria-stabilized zirconia that is used in some ceramic hip implants and dental crowns &#8211; to make it transparent.<\/p>\n<p>They argue the material would be safe to implant, but would also provide a window onto the brain.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/health-23929991\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read More&gt;&gt;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0A &#8220;window to the brain&#8221; implant which would allow doctors to see through the skull and possibly treat patients has been devised by US researchers.
